Ingrown Toenail Home Remedies

Ingrown Toe nail can be really painful and there are some home remedies to get rid of it. Here are a few:

1. You should wear an open shoe like sandals etc, and keep the toe clean by at least cleaning it thrice and dip it in a Qtip in hydrogen peroxide and clean just the side of the nail which is swollen so that the peroxide would bubble up, and then put iodine in the same area and dry it by putting antibiotics. Never cut such nail just file it.

2. The best way to get rid instantly is to first put an antibiotic ointment and soak it in water (you can even use Epsom salt in the water) for about 15-30min smoothing the sides of the toe. Then with a pair of toenail trimmers snip a small crack into the side of the toenail with the help of a clippers and pull out the ingrown toenail part (this can be painful but its quick and effective). After this put antibiotic ointment on the edge and place a bandage on allowing it to heal.

3. You can try cutting a slight 'V' knotch on the end and mid point of your toe nail. This causes the nail to grow towards the center away from the edges. This will not heal instantly, but over time, it works well.

4. If the toenail becomes ingrown due to clipping the nail down too short at the cuticle then let it grow out. While it's growing out keep it medicated with Neosporin every night and put a good elastic material type band-aid on it to keep it clean from infection. Once it becomes ingrown it can take two or three months to grown out above the end of cuticle.

5. Use some lip moisturizing oil (made by aquafina) and place it on the nails every night before bed. This helps in making nails thinner and softer thus you can easily use the pointed nail clippers to pull the ingrown nail up with minimal pain.

6. Another ingrown home remedy to make the ingrown toenail soft is by cutting a lemon in half. Put toe in lemon. Put sock over foot and let it soak overnight.

7. Fill up a basin or tub with warm water, add a tablespoon of salt, and soak your foot for 15 to 20 minutes. Next, gently wedge a tiny bit of dry cotton, such as part of a cotton wool ball, under the ingrown corner or corners of the nail. This will need to be repeated nightly for 2 or 3 weeks until the nail has grown out.
